Broke Man's Guide to Athens
Athens, GA
2023
Case study for a guide to navigating
Athens, Georgia on a budget.

Despite being home to the University of Georgia, Athens-Clarke county is one of the poorest counties in Georgia. Our team decided the county needs a financial resource guide to give the central citizens of Athens a way to enjoy their hometown without breaking the bank.
We decided the best way to address the issue of creating a financial resource would be to create a monthly periodical. That way we can update the guide with the newest and hottest deals as well as highlighting the general best spots to shop and get food for cheap.
To accomplish this, we split our group of eight designers into two teams: print and digital.
The print team would create a pocket-sized issue for October while the digital team would design an app and social media page.

We didn’t want anyone who read our guide to feel less than anyone else just because they needed financial help, so we designed this periodical as a fun, inclusive guide that anyone can use to have a good time.

On the digital side of things, our team created an app counterpart as well as a social media page.

As a member of the print team, my role evolved over the course of the project in order to fill out what needed to be done.
This included:
Drafting page layouts
Researching Info
Setting up print settings (as well as printing)
By far my most important contribution to the project was...

With our combined efforts we produced a high-quality resource that is both inclusive and accessible to anyone. Whether you like to carry a pocket book with you or just want to pull out your phone, our guide caters to anyone looking for some good deals.
Through the process of designing and creating our deliverables, I gained a lot of insight in how to work in a team setting. Communication was key and, though that sometimes failed, we were still able to pool our experience together to pull off what we accomplished. Personally, this was a great experience for me as it really forced me to really focus on designing my illustrations to match and compliment the overall style of our project.
